Rust remover can also be used on it. After you have taken the worst of the rust off, use a soft cloth with a light oil spray on it and rub the the track down. When you use steel wool, there is good chance that small steel particles will deposit on your track. As your train goes over it, it can very easily pick it up and then over time ruin the smoothness with which your train runs. Also keep in mind that steel wool is quite harsh, and that though you might be able to take the rust off the train, you may end up taking some of the finish off with it as well.
